BilBOlbul International Comics Festival is a project curated by Hamelin Cultural Association. It is dedicated to auteur comics and presents the work of established artists and young talent from Italy and abroad. BilBOlbul was created in Bologna in 2001 as a cultural initiative throughout the year with a series of events about comics. This experience and the network it created helped to realize the festival which debuted in 2007.
With the 2016 edition, BilBOlbul turns 10 and celebrates by renewing its commitment to bring to Bologna important italian and international artists.
The celebration of the tenth anniversary will be marked by the arrival of Chris Ware in Italy for his first dedicated exhibition in our country, in the spaces of the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna. In addition to the exhibition, Coconino Press Fandango will release the first Italian catalog dedicated to the work of the American artist, curated by Hamelin.
Following the festival’s aspiration to make valuable Italian artists best known, the official opening of BilBObul will be with an exhibition dedicated to the inspiration and the rich design and stories of Marco Corona, in a solo exhibition in the Pinacoteca of Belle Arti. For the same wish, BilBOlbul also brings attention to another great work, which was likely to be forgotten, the one of Anna Brandoli and Renato Queirolo that will be exhibited at the Accademia di Belle Arti.
Another really exceptional guest is David Wiesner, a giant of illustration in America and worldwide: in his work he’s able to merge a meticulous realism with vivid imagination. His exhibition, that will take place in Cineteca di Bologna, will be a focal point of the festival for the little ones.
But the list of the festival’s guests don’t stop there. This year the landscape is rich with Italian and contemporary artists, established or first timers in the publishing market: from Gipi to Elena Guidolin, from Tuono Pettinato to Federico Manzone, passing to Gabriel Delmas, Toccafondo and Laurent Moreau.
The authors, like every year, will be engaged in exhibitions, public meetings, workshops, dedicated sessions, performances, round-table discussions, portfolio reviews … And, as in past years, BBBZine will bring in Bologna the most interesting international self-production, for a micro market in Salaborsa during the days of the festival weekend.
BBB Lab – Making Comics: development opportunities for young authors
In 2016 Bilbolbul continues the work with young professionals and aspiring authors, expanding its range of BBB Lab.
Round Tables
Three round tables for investigating diverse aspects of editorial and artistic work, including a range of experts in the field, both domestically and internationally, open to the public. They are discussions on how the genre is represented in the drawing, to describe the comic book production in South America, and the dichotomy between the narrative and the form of the language.
Workshop
Three practical workshops during which the participants will meet and work with some of the leaders of contemporary comics and illustration: this year, Laurent Moreau, David Wiesner and Marco Corona.
Meetings with Editors- Portfolio Reviews
For anyone hoping to enter the world of professional comics and illustration, BBB offers the chance to meet with a specialist for your particular area.
BBBZine returns!
Five international self-productions of comics and illustration come together at the festival for the now annual market of fanzines BBBZine. On 26 and 27 of November, in the covered square Salaborsa, you will find a fair exhibition dedicated to a discovery of the most contemporary experimental creations of self-production. This year, a special place will be given to the Spanish production.
For those who make comics, illustration or other, the self-productions seems the easiest way to print and distribute their work. A lot of these groups do not exceed the first number, but the only thing that matters is to get away for a moment from the book market and create no other law than that which you invent.
Ediciones Valientes, Central Vapeur, Martin Lopez Làm, Jorge Parras, Arbitraire, La Camaraderie e Los Bravù will be at BilBOlbul to show us their own way of making manual books.
SOPRA LA PANCA : un scioglilingua disegnato
