This year’s comics artists are keen to looking for traces of fantasy in the real world. Gianluca Ascione chose to explore one world in particular: the world of dating apps. An emerging talent in the Italian comics scene, Ascione presents his first short graphic novel Il Grifone d’oro (The Golden Griffin), a story about the intricacies of relationships in the digital age, set in a psychedelic version of the city of Bologna, located somewhere between the art of Andrea Pazienza and the pop aesthetic of Cartoon Network.

Il grifone d’oro – the new volume of the short stories series “Henry Darger” by Canicola Edizioni – is a sturm und drang that takes place between Grindr notifications. It tells the story of Gianni and Francesco’s relationship as a frantic rush of lust, an emotional disorientation. Gianluca Ascione reinterprets the city of Bologna in Cartoon Network style, and he fills it with fantastic creatures. The exhibition shows the result of this psychedelic mix where Inio Asano, Final Fantasy and Eichiiro Oda softly dissolve Andrea Pazienza’s madness with Steven Universe‘s magic.
