The exhibition Io sono Mare is dedicated to the children’s comic book of the same title by Italian cartoonist Cristina Portolano. Io sono Mare is part of the project “Dalla parte delle bambine” by Canicola, whose aim is to educate children to gender equality through exhibitions, workshops and books.

Cristina Portolano was born in Naples in 1986. She graduated at the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts. She is a cartoonist, illustrator, and art teacher. Her illustrations have been published on several magazine, such as Internazionale, Lo straniero, Hamelin, Illywords, Napoli Monitor, and in the best selling book Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. She worked with many self-publishing labels and collectives – ernest, Delebile, Teiera, Squame. She won several awards, and her work was exposed in exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. Her last graphic novels are Non so chi sei (Rizzoli Lizard, 2018) and Io sono Mare (Canicola, 2018).
