AT FESTIVAL
Diario di un addio (Comma 22, 2010) is young drawer and winner of Komikazen 2009 Pietro Scarnera’s debut comic book. It’s an autobiographic and painful story in which the author talks about his experience beside his father laying in vegetative state for a period of five years. Scarnera has collected sketches and drawings through the years: faces, waiting periods, silences gave birth to a delicate end moving narration. This “diary” is a tender report in which fears, waiting periods and weak hopes come together to rebuild the father’s image. Scarnera’s synthetic way of drawing in alternation with white backgrounds perfectly fit the narration: it seems the only possible way to tell the facts with a rational approach, avoiding the dramatic tones of the situation. Beside talking about a delicate moment in the author’s life, Diario di un addio touches issues of topical interest, and by employing images’ sincerity makes us think about the difficulty of living in such a condition of solitude.
