AT FESTIVAL
Considered among the most breaking-edge personalities of the new generation of French comic authors, Ruppert & Mulot use comic language as a tool to express their artistic universe and give voice to their view of the world. Through their style, marked by a balance between the cleanliness of the characters and the extreme richness of the spaces that surround them, Florent Ruppert and Jérôme Mulot brought an important contribution to the renewal of contemporary comics, suggesting expressive innovations and experimenting new formats.
Their exhibition Little theater of inebriation is an invitation to rediscover the magic of moving images through the interaction with particular optical devices used by the authors to develop absurd and grotesque narrations.
Ruppert & Mullot collaborate in both writing and drawing their stories, suggesting an unstructured narrative approach to comics in which drawings and texts don’t come together, but cause metalinguistic short-circuits with the aim to create a playful complicity with the reader.
By moving away from the printing process, Ruppert & Mullot give birth to a more plastic language that reconsider comic codes and takes in influences from different arts.
Beside the show at Museo della Musica, BilBOlbul introduces Irene e i clochard, the Italian translation of their last book published by Canicola. A graphic novel in which drawing mastery is combined with a conceptual approach aimed to create a charming story for what concerns both, narrative rhythm and depth of the issues taken into consideration.
Ruppert & Mulot are also protagonists of the exhibition taking place at Al Cappello Rosso hotel during the festival.  Artists will develop a project inside one of the hotel’s rooms, working on walls and furniture. The “artist’s room”, an idea born from the collaboration between BilBolbul and Al Cappello Rosso hotel, is one of the most intriguing proposals of the festival. The opening of the room will be held on the last day of the event, Sunday the 6th of March.
BIOGRAPHY
Florent Ruppert (1979) and Jérôme Mulot (1981) meet at École nationale supérieure d'arts in Dijon and start their collaboration in 2002. Their comic strips are published by various alternative fanzine, like Bile Noire and Le nouveau journal de Judith et Marinette. Jean-Christophe Menu, enthusiastic for their stories for Ferraille Illustré, asks them to publish their works for l’Association. The collaboration with l’Association starts in 2005 with Safari Monseigneur, which takes Ruppert & Mulot to a wider audience. In 2007 their Panier de Singe is prized with the “Prix Révélation” at Angoulême Festival.
Le Tricheur and Sol Carrelus are published in 2008, followed in 2009 by the first volume of Irène et les clochards, in which the authors show their scriptwriting skills, creating a delicate and moving story.
