AT FESTIVAL
Dutch drawer Brecht Evens is one of the most talented and promising authors of the experimental comic scene, his first graphic novel Les Noceurs was in fact nominated for Angoulême Festival 2011 official selection. His style is characterized by an almost inexistent brushstroke. It’s a visual research carried on with graphic tools like the sign and the composition of the page, in which the stratification of vivid colour stains and transparencies create a pictorial - but at the same time almost ethereal and unreal - effect.
At PivArte Gallery the author displays the original drawings from Le Noceurs and some drawings from his last book The Wrong Place, translated in four languages and nominated among the best books of 2009 by “Humo Magazine” and “Forbidden Planet”.
Les Noceurs is a bitter-sweet narration of confidences and every-day feelings of a ground of young friends. One of most interesting traits of Evens’ book is the lightness of his figures, watery like the substance they are made of. Colour is nonetheless extremely powerful: layers, multiplication of details, crowded spaces, the contrast between little creatures springing out from white backgrounds and pages in which colours gather and melt. Also the atmosphere of these drawings, always hanging between dream and reality, recall a modern style feast rich in details and variations, in which “frivolity” becomes the essence of a social and generational portrait: a grotesque ensorian carnival.
